Balayage is lightener painted on by hand rather than pulled through foils, which is why the grow-out is soft and you are not chained to a touch-up every six weeks. On dark and textured hair it takes more skill than it does on blonde hair, because your strands lift through orange and red on the way to anything lighter and the placement has to follow how your curls fall rather than how they sit flat. Painted well, it looks sunlit rather than striped.
Every appointment starts with a consultation, and sometimes a strand test, because we will not guess with your hair. Previous color, box dye, relaxer history and heat damage all change what is possible and how many sessions it takes. Going several levels lighter on virgin dark hair is normally two or three appointments spaced weeks apart. Anyone promising it in one sitting is either overpromising or planning to overprocess you, and on curly hair overprocessing shows up as a lost curl pattern.

How many sessions will I need?
One if you are only going a shade or two lighter. Two or three, spaced several weeks apart, if you are starting from dark virgin hair and want real brightness. Previously colored or box-dyed hair can take longer still. We map the whole plan at the consultation so you know the timeline and the total before we start.
Will lightener ruin my curl pattern?
It can if it is pushed too far, which is the honest risk on textured hair. We manage it with bond protection in the lightener, conservative processing, and stopping at a level your hair can hold rather than the one in the photo. If your hair is not ready, we will say so and give you a plan to get it there.
Can you balayage over relaxed or previously colored hair?
Sometimes, carefully, and never on the same day as a relaxer. Relaxed hair and hair carrying old box color have already been chemically stressed, so we strand test first and often lift less than you were hoping for in the first session. Bring your full color history when you call, including anything done at home.
How do I take care of it afterward?
Sulfate-free shampoo, cool water, deep conditioning weekly and a bond treatment every few washes. Lightened textured hair drinks moisture and gets brittle without it. Cut your heat use back and always use a protectant. Purple shampoo once every couple of weeks keeps brass down, but overusing it will make your hair feel dry.
