K tip extensions are the closest thing to hair that simply grew in. Each strand carries a small keratin tip that we soften around a fine section of your own hair with a heat connector, leaving a bond that is flexible and roughly the size of a grain of rice. There is no thread, no track and no tape edge anywhere in the head. That is why you can wear a high ponytail, a middle part or a deep side part without arranging your hair to hide something.
Because the weight is spread across two hundred or more separate bonds instead of a handful of rows, k-tips sit quietly on fine and medium hair that cannot carry a heavy weft. Each strand also moves on its own, which is what makes them read as yours in photographs and in daylight. Clients who have worn microlinks or hand-tied rows often switch for exactly that reason. The trade-off is chair time: a full head is a four to six hour appointment and we do not rush the sectioning.
You get three to four months before the bonds have grown too far down, then we remove them with a keratin-safe solution and either re-tip the same hair or replace it. Shampoo at the scalp, keep conditioner and oil off the bonds themselves, and work a loop brush up from the ends. Do keratin bond extensions damage your hair?
How are k-tips different from tape-ins or a sew-in?
A sew-in puts wefts on a braided base and a tape-in sandwiches wefts around a section, so both create rows. K-tips are individual strands, so there is no row to feel and nothing to hide when you part your hair. They also last the longest of the three. The cost is a longer appointment and a higher labor price.
Do keratin bonds damage your hair?
The bond itself is gentle, but three things cause trouble: bonds attached to sections that are too small, hair worn far past its grow-out window, and removal done with the wrong product. We size sections to your density, set your grow-out date the day we install, and take them down with a proper keratin remover instead of pulling.
Can I use heat tools and color the hair?
Yes on heat, within reason, as long as you keep the iron and dryer away from the bonds themselves. Color is a different conversation. We can tone and darken the extension hair, but lifting it is unpredictable and we usually order the shade you want instead. Call and describe the color you are after before you buy hair.
How many strands will I need?
Fine hair adding length only tends to land between one hundred and one hundred fifty strands. A full head with real thickness runs two hundred to three hundred, more if you are going past eighteen inches. Density, not head size, drives the number. We count it out at the consultation so you are not guessing at checkout.
How do I sleep and work out in them?
Braid or loosely twist the hair at night and use a silk or satin pillowcase. For the gym, put it up before you start and let the scalp dry fully afterward instead of leaving sweat sitting at the roots. Brush morning and night with a loop brush from the ends up so the bonds never matte together.
