There are three hair extension types we install at our Cortlandt Street studio in Tarrytown, and choosing between them is far more a question of your own hair than a question of taste. A sew-in weave braids your natural hair down and stitches wefts onto those braids. Tape-in extensions sandwich thin sections of your hair between two adhesive wefts that lie flat against the head. K-tip extensions bond small keratin-tipped strands in one at a time. Same goal, three different commitments of money, time and upkeep.
Cost tracks two things: how much hair the look needs and how long the install takes to do properly. A sew-in is usually the most affordable full head, because it goes in relatively fast and good bundles get reused for months. Tape-ins sit in the middle and climb when you want real density. K-tips cost the most, because every strand is bonded individually and a full head is several hours in the chair. Length moves all three numbers, which is why we quote by phone instead of publishing one flat figure.
Wear time is where the methods truly separate. A sew-in stays in six to eight weeks before the braid base underneath loosens and has to come out. Tape-ins are lifted and re-taped every six to eight weeks, and the same hair usually survives two or three of those moves. K-tips run three to four months with a bond check partway through. None of these are fit-and-forget. The installs that damage hair are almost always the ones that were left in months past their window.
Damage risk has less to do with the method than with tension, weight and timing. Fine hair struggles under a heavy sew-in and does well with tape-ins spread over many small sections. Thick or coarse 4a to 4c textures hold a sew-in beautifully, while tape adhesive can slip on very oily or freshly conditioned hair. Relaxed and colour-treated hair needs a lighter install whichever route you take. K-tip bonds last the longest in one sitting, typically three to four months before a full removal and re-bond. A sew-in runs six to eight weeks, and tape-ins are re-taped on the same schedule but the hair itself often lasts through several move-ups. Longest wear is not automatically best for your hair. Do hair extensions damage your hair?
The gentlest method is the one that suits your hair. Tape-ins are usually kindest to fine hair because weight is spread over many small sections. A properly tensioned sew-in is excellent for thick, coarse and 4a to 4c textures because nothing is glued to the strand. Damage comes from installs that are too tight, too heavy for the hair, or left in long past the removal date.

No. You are welcome to bring your own bundles or strands and pay for the install only, and that is often the cheaper route if you already have quality hair. We will look at what you bring and say honestly whether it will hold up for the wear time you are hoping for. We can also source hair for you if you would rather not shop for it yourself.
Can I get extensions if my hair is thin or shedding?
Sometimes, and sometimes the right answer is to wait. Extensions add weight, and hair that is actively shedding or has a stressed scalp needs that addressed first. We look at your hairline, your part and your scalp before recommending anything. If your hair is not ready, we will say so and suggest a lighter option or a scalp treatment instead of taking the booking.
